Spain Tops Henley Passport Index in 2024

For the first time since the Henley Passport Index began 19 years ago, Spain has topped the list of the most powerful passports. Utilizing data from the IATA, the Index ranks passports from 199 countries based on their access to 227 destinations, specifically focusing on the number of visa-free entries allowed.

Consistently Strong Performance

Spain has been a consistent performer in the Henley Passport Index, always staying within the top five except for one year in sixth place. After holding the third position since 2020, the Spanish passport finally reached the number one spot in 2024, sharing the podium with France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and Singapore, all having visa-free access to 194 destinations.

The Most Powerful Passports in 2024

Following Spain and its co-leaders, seven countries occupy the second place with a score of 193. This group includes six European countries and South Korea. The top ten are predominantly European, though Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, and the UAE also feature prominently.

Passport Power and Economic Performance

Researchers of the Index note a strong correlation between passport power and economic performance, especially in countries with citizenship-by-investment programs. For instance, Spain offers residency through investment in the economy, although the acceptance of real estate investments is set to change. Investments in Spanish companies, shares, or Treasury bonds can still grant visas for immigrants and their dependents.

Desirability of the Spanish Passport

Spain’s appeal extends beyond its powerful passport. It is a top EU destination for UK nationals, the second-best country for expats and remote workers, and boasts four of the world’s top ten cities for expats. These factors contribute to its desirability as a destination for immigrants.

Obtaining a Spanish Passport

Gaining a Spanish passport requires Spanish citizenship, which involves fulfilling residency requirements. Non-nationals must live in Spain for at least half of each year for five years to apply for permanent residency. After another five years, they can take the citizenship exams.
